American Museum In Britain

The museum occupies an 1820 neo-classical mansion set in beautiful grounds overlooking the valley of the River Avon. 

Through a series of period rooms, many furnished with original panelling and floorboards from the United States, visitors are introduced to the way in which Americans lived from the late 17th to the mid-19th centuries. Over 50 quilts and other fabrics on display in the Textile Room. 

The Exhibition Gallery has a programme of seasonal exhibitions, as well as an important collection of 15th and 16th century printed maps.

What is there to see?

In the main house a spectacular series of diverse and authentically furnished rooms, trace the American way of life from colonial times to the mid 19th century.

There are extensive grounds containing a Mount Vernon Garden, an American Arboretum and museum trails.

In the main house fifteen rooms depict how the settlers lived, the Pennsylvania-Germans, the Shakers and a wonderfully opulent New Orleans Bedroom of 1860.
