Clifton College Sports Centre
Clifton College Sports Centre is situated in the unique and historic grounds of Clifton College. Thanks to extensive refurbishment, the sports facilities within are quite a contrast to the old school buildings and offer members everything they need to reach their fitness goals. The facilities on offer are as follows:
Two Fitness facilities – The spacious area at the main site at Guthrie Rd, Clifton, offers carefully selected multigym, cardio and weight-training equipment. Also we now have the latest in Cardio theatre to help make your workout just that little bit easier.
The Centre also has a sister site, the Workshop Fitness Centre, situated just 5 minutes from the Suspension Bridge at Clifton College Sports Ground in Abbots Leigh, and now members can use both of these facilities for the price of one!
A 25m swimming pool - this is kept at 30 degrees centigrade and has well-equipped changing rooms. We run a programme of adults only and open swim sessions. Also included in the weekly programme is a Sunday morning fun swim session for all the children and families.
Squash, badminton courts and tennis (tennis April – September only) – are also available as part of the membership package.
Golf at our Ashton Court golf course.
Exercise classes are also available.
We have personal trainers on site who can offer you advice on tailored training programmes as well as nutritional and lifestyle coaching (additional charges for these services)
Our memberships vary from Individual to Family, monthly to annual. Our rates are very competitive with our monthly membership rates starting from as little as £36.50.

Enjoy two gyms for the price of one and never get bored again!
We all know how hard it is to stay motivated when it comes to getting down to the gym every week, but Clifton College is offering a unique combined sports membership to keep their gym-bunnies bouncing by allowing members the flexibility to use both their sites – one in historic Clifton and the other nestled among the green fields of Abbots Leigh.
Richard Avery is the manager of Clifton College’s Sports Centre on Guthrie Road, a well-established facility which is used and enjoyed by hundreds of local people. The Centre has a sister site, The Workshop Fitness Centre, over the Suspension Bridge at Clifton College Sports Ground in Abbots Leigh, and now members can use both facilities for the price of one. “We all know that regular exercise has huge health benefits, as well as helping people relax, lose weight and shape up,” said Richard. “I encourage people to try a range of different activities until they find those that best suit their fitness levels and lifestyle. We have an excellent gym here but that’s not for everyone and even the most motivated of gym-devotees could benefit from a change of scene from time to time. That’s why we’ve opened up our Workshop Fitness Centre in Abbots Leigh to our Guthrie Road members and vice versa. The Workshop has the latest Precor exercise machines and is set on our 90-acre site over the bridge, which comes into it’s own in the warmer months when the gym is transformed into a partially open air facility.”
“Some people prefer to swim in our lovely 25m indoor heated pool and others are motivated by competitive activities like squash and badminton. Those activities are on offer too, along with exercise classes at a small additional fee. This flexibility of facilities across the two sites gives people more options to vary their workout with the aim of keeping their interest up,” says Richard.
For those who find it difficult to get going, he recommends working with a personal trainer who can devise a programme to achieve the desired goals. They can also offer nutritional advice and lifestyle coaching for those who feel they really need an incentive to improve the way they live.
Tom Rendell works as freelance personal trainer at both Clifton College sites. “It is crucial to lay out realistic targets. If someone has not undertaken any formal exercise recently, it is not wise for them to join the gym with the aim of going five times a week,” says Tom. “Once people start missing gym sessions, feelings of guilt and embarrassment creep in and it is all too easy to stop going completely. In time, relatively small changes bring the most benefit and you can then look to develop your fitness further.”
Both gyms are within easy reach of Clifton, Cotham and Redland and with flexible payment options (monthly or annual), there’s really no excuse not to call in and have a look. Richard Avery would like to invite anyone who might be interested in becoming a member to bring this article along and have a free swim at the Guthrie Road site!
