The Harbour Hotel’s fabulous Jetty Restaurant is launching its new menu and the What’s On team joined other movers and shakers of Bristol to drink a glass of fizz, sample a signature cocktail or two at the chic Gold Bar and then taste some of the dishes on the exciting new menu.

The Gold Bar is as opulent as it sounds with plush furniture and fancy fittings the perfect place to enjoy a tipple or two before dinner. The bar staff mix a mean cocktail with all the trimmings and serve ice-cold Prosecco so that us girls were extremely happy, if not a bit giggly before we were ushered into the restaurant.

We were wowed by the array of nibbles laid out across a long table : truffle arancini, crab croquettes, ham croquettes, tempura prawn, tempura vegetables and cockle popcorn, to take your pick; I loved the tempura vegetables and saw someone who shall be nameless and shameless take ownership of a whole small saucepan of cockle popcorn (the recipe is a secret but I think they are lightly dipped in seasoned flour and fried) it was so moreish.

We tried a trio of starters, south coast crab on toast, delicate stone bass ceviche and octopus carpaccio, the Jetty has a reputation as one of the best fish restaurants in town and they certainly deserve it. Cod and crab with mash and crushed peas is their signature main course dish which was lovely and we finished with a duo of desserts; baked vanilla cheesecake, and S’mores. Apparently S’mores is a traditional camp fire treat popular in the USA and Canada where they grill marshmallows over the fire, spread crackers with melted chocolate and make a sandwich of it. I’m not sure about the camp fire bit but otherwise it’s a great import – this is a more upmarket version - dreamy toasted marshmallows with chocolate ganache, peanut butter ice-cream and peanut crunch, quite worth swooning over.

The Jetty’s new menu is certainly something to shout about and we took full advantage of our preview!
