Ring O Bells Pub, Compton Martin
Date: 9 June 2008

Ring O Bells Pub, Compton Martin

Ring O'Bells Pub, Compton Martin

The Ring O'Bells at Compton Martin is a most charming and delightful country pub in Compton Martin close to Chew Valley Lake and the Mendips.  They have a very pretty and well-tended garden with a small play area to keep children amused whilst their parents appreciate a fine pint of Butcombe bitter or maybe try one of the ranges of local ciders served straight from the cask.  What could be better on a fine summer's evening?

We had booked to have supper in the pub and to hear the local folk band play; live folk music is on offer every Thursday night.  The pub has a really nice atmosphere and its interior is traditional with a low beamed ceilings and comfortable furniture.  Mark and Lynsey Alley, the new managers, are highly experienced in their field and are full of enthusiasm for their new venture with the Ring O'Bells.  Their brief is to serve simple, wholesome, old-fashioned food to the highest standard in pleasant and welcoming surroundings and I must say I think so far they have succeeded handsomely.

We took the menus, which as well as detailing all the dishes contained many amusing quotes, some local history and the sources of the produce, which is all local.  To start, I decided on grilled goat's cheese with dressed mixed leaves and toasted pine nuts, and as I knew he would, my sorry-he-wasn't-part-of-the-local-darts-team (they do have one!) husband chose spicy crab cakes.  Both starters were excellent and even the waitress commented on our clean plates!  We ordered a bottle of Californian rosé wine called Sutter Home White Zinfandel, one of our favourites with an unusual history. Sutter Home accidentally invented the so called white Zinfandel when what they thought would turn out to be a dry, virtually white wine, turned out to have more colour and an attractive sweetness.
