The Bowl Inn
An historic inn offering superb
accommodation, excellent food, fine wines and real ales.
With over twenty five years in this family-run business, the ALLEY FAMILY welcomes
you to the historic Bowl Inn and Lilies Restaurant. Whether on business or
pleasure, the extensive range of food, drink and accommodation will ensure your
stay is most enjoyable.
Nestling on the southeastern edge of the Severn Vale in the village of Lower
Almondsbury, The Bowl Inn derives its name from the shape of the land
surrounding the Severn Estuary, which can be seen from the inn. Parts of this
picturesque, whitewashed stone inn were originally the three cottages erected
in 1146 to house the monks building the adjacent church of St Mary the Virgin.
During subsequent centuries, the tunnels between these cottages, the church and
priory (now a farmhouse) were created to afford protection against marauding
foreign invaders. The present building became a licensed inn in 1550, and it
was used by James II’s sheriffs during the latter half of the seventeenth
century to try supporters of the Duke of Monmouth.

Accommodation
Each comfortable room has been individually furnished to complement the original architectural features uncovered during the restoration of the upper floor. Huge ceiling beams, stonework niches and fireplaces have been revealed and skillfully restored to make each room unique. Every room is en-suite and equipped with a telephone, tea and coffee-making facilities, colour television with Sky TV and video player, trouser press, computer & internet access and a hair dryer.
Restaurant
Lilies Restaurant offers a cosy and well-appointed environment in which to enjoy a superb meal at an affordable price. Since Roman times, the white flower of the Lwum candidum, or Madonna Lily, has been a symbol of Purity. We have adopted this flower as our emblem because we endeavour to use pure ingredients to create pure pleasure. The restaurant is a no-smoking area.
We aim to use the highest quality fresh produce available to us, and all food is cooked and prepared to order. The menu has been created with great care and skill to tempt and satisfy all tastes and appetites - a cornucopia of traditional and vegetarian options. Whatever mood you are in, there will-be a dish that matches it. Your waiter or waitress will be glad to advise you, especially if you have any particular needs or requests.
The wines on our wine list and fine wine list have been thoughtfully chosen for quality and variety. Clear tasting notes describe the wines and provide suggestions for great food and wine partnerships.
Bar
For those who wish to eat in the more informal atmosphere of the bar, we have an extremely wide range of meals and snacks, from baguettes to the finest beef, from pasta to mussels. Children’s portions are also available. As in the restaurant, our twin aims are consistent quality and value for money. Because we are a free house, we are able to offer 6 or 7 cask ales, and there’s an excellent selection of wines by the glass.
