A Chinese restaurant in Bristol has been named as one of the top five in the
country by the man who created one of the nation’s favourite Oriental chains.
Michelin-starred chef Alan Yau who started the Wagamama chain, nominated Dynasty
in Thomas Street as one of his favourite places to eat. Naming his top five
Chinese restaurants in a national newspaper; Mr Yau chose Dynasty, three venues
in London and one in Glasgow.
The article described Dynasty as: "A favourite meeting place of the Slow Food
Movement, as well as local Chinese restaurant owners, Dynasty is run by a
friendly bunch who try hard to encourage a younger generation to try traditional
Chinese dishes. The chefs are Hong Kong-trained and make excellent dim sum".
The most authentic food is to be had from the section of the menu written in
hieroglyphs, but if your Cantonese is not so hot, you can always sweet-talk the
waiters into revealing what these dishes are. The Szechaau ’Hot Pot’ involves
cooking your own meat at the table in a fiery broth of meat stock and chillies,
while fresh sea bass and lobsters are simply steamed whole with ginger and
spring onion. Eels with black bean sauce is another local favourite and if you
fancy a lavish birthday party, the Ho family will cheerfully spend days
preparing dried abalore.
Suzanna Ho, the owner of Dynasty, said: "We are very pleased to have more
recognition. We take great pride in the quality of our food and make sure that
it is as authentic as possible. The food is the same as you would find in China
or Hong Kong and that is reflected in the fact that almost half of our customers
are members of Bristol’s Chinese community. "We have been established here for
seven years and have managed to build up a reputation in that time, mainly
through word of mouth.
"We have been adapting our menu throughout the year to reflect the
seasons".
